| The protein encoded by this gene is actually apreproprotein that is cleaved into four distinct mature peptides.One of these, glucagon, is a pancreatic hormone that counteractsthe glucose-lowering action of insulin by stimulatingglycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis. Glucagon is a ligand for aspecific G-protein linked receptor whose signalling pathwaycontrols cell proliferation. Two of the other peptides are secretedfrom gut endocrine cells and promote nutrient absorption throughdistinct mechanisms. Finally, the fourth peptide is similar toglicentin, an active enteroglucagon. |
